November 9 1967, the first issue of Rolling Stone Magazine was published in San Francisco, founded by Jann Wenner and Ralph Gleason.

It featured a photo of John Lennon on the cover of the very first issue.

In the image Lennon is dressed as in his recent film, How I Won the War. That instantly establishes the mix of politics, culture and music that has come to define the magazine.

"There was nothing called rock journalism as a profession,"

Wenner says.

"If you picked up Billboard, you might get a sense of the music business, but you wouldn't keep it as part of your regular diet if you were interested in rock & roll."

In the first issue, Wenner explained that the title of the magazine referred to the 1950 blues song, "Rollin' Stone", recorded by Muddy Waters, the rock and roll band the Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan's hit single "Like a Rolling Stone".
