Ziggy Stardust has landed on Planet Earth

6 July 1972, David Bowie appears on the popular music show Top Of The Pops, performing "Starman".

In June, the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars is released, starring his alter ego Ziggy Stardust.

His TOTP performance is an introduction to the world of the character and it leaves an impression among the conservative British audience.

'Starman' was the first hit since 1969's 'Space Oddity' three years before.

The album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars is the Bowie’s fifth studio album and it has been described as a concept album telling the story of a fictional rock star named Ziggy Stardust.

The album is well known for its glam rock influences as well as for the sexual exploration theme.

The performance of "Starman" on Top of the Pops fueled the ambiguity rumors about Bowie's sexuality.
