Giving music for free: always a good idea? The case of U2 with iTunes

Songs of Innocence is the thirteenth studio album by Irish rock band U2, released on 9 September 2014. The album was released as a free download for iTunes users, as part of new iPhones’ launch by Apple.
Who'd have thought it would be a mess to give away music for free?
This is what happened when U2 announced that their new album would be automatically gifted to iTunes users. Indeed, many were not happy and complained about the fact that the album had automatically been downloaded through their iTunes’ accounts without their permission…even for free.
Rapper Tyler, the Creator reaction:
It was on 14 September 2014 when Apple released a tool to delete more easily the tracks from iTunes accounts, six days after the mess.
