Iggy Pop unveils “American Valhalla” Video… full of history

Iggy Pop unveils “American Valhalla” Video directed by Jamie-James Medina - sound identity blog

The new video is a combination of 1963 boxing match, Pop performances and the model Ruth Bell

Iggy Pop unveiled and shared the new video of “American Valhalla from his latest album “Post Pop Depression”, in collaboration with Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age).

The video is directed by Jamie-James Medina, starring Ruth Bell, model of the moment. In a black-and-white context it reminds images of 1963 middleweight boxing title fight. The video juxtaposes clips of a boxing match and Iggy Pop’s performance.

We have to wait the end of the video to see Bell…with bruises on her face.

Iggy Pop said: “This is my favorite song and Ruth’s performance is brilliant, thanks kid.”

Jamie-James Medina said to Nowness:

I love Iggy Pop and I’m a huge boxing fan. {…} I was listening to ‘American Valhalla’ and was reminded of this very low-key but classic fight between Dick Tiger and Gene Fullmer, which took place in Nigeria in 1963 and for whatever reason I found a connection there

There is so much history in Iggy’s voice and that seems to be a theme throughout his new record —the contender or the survivor or the last man standing. Iggy remembers watching the fight, which is incredible”
